Zone 12 – Off San Leandro Street between 66th and 69th Avenues, Oakland
In 2010, the District worked with the city of Oakland to complete a project that complements the Lion Creek Crossing residential development. As part of the project, a pocket park facing 66th Avenue was moved to the middle of the housing development where it was enhanced with native landscaping to create an inviting space for residents and locals to visit.
To make the park and residential development more attractive, the District constructed a natural bypass creek that runs parallel to the existing concrete-lined flood channel (Line J). The Line J channel must be retained for effective flood control management. To camouflage the concrete Line J channel, both sides of the bypass creek were landscaped with native plants and trees. A bridge and benches provide resting places to view the creek.
